I would like to take this opportunity to introduce to you a newly established Chinese school serving the greater Seattle area. The name of the school is Northwest Chinese School. The school was incorporated in the State of Washington as a non-profit, non-political and non-religious affiliated organization. The school teaches simplified Chinese characters, standard mandarin and Han Yu Pin Yin, as well as Chinese cultures. After several months of preparation, the school had its classes on June 24, 1995. Currently, the school has its classes on Saturday mornings offering three chinese classes, two drwing classes and one Tiji class. There are more than 40 students. There have been some Chinese schools in the United States. Some of them are doing very well (e.g. the Ann-Hua Chinese School in Ann Arbor, Michigan from which we learnt about the CSAUS). As a new school, we got a lot to learn from them. The Chinese School Association offers a great opportunities for the Chinese schools to exchange information and experiences. We are very interested in joining the association. It would be appreciated if you could send us the information on the association (e.g. Purposes, Bylaws, Organization Structures, Regulations, Fees, etc., even if they are temporary). Also, please include us in your mailing list to receive the news on the association and the Chinese schools. I'd like to thank you for your hard work in coordinating the communication among the rapidly growing Chinese schools in the U.S. and I want to take the opportunity to thank CHEN Biao for his excellent work on the establishment of this e-mail network and his beautiful Chinese School home page. The purpose of my writing this message is twofold: (1) to make a suggestion about the use of this e-mail network, and (2) to ask a few questions about the annual meeting in Ohio. 1. The e-mail network for the association has been in operation for some time and its importance has been obvious. But given the convenience and expertise we have, I believe we can further tap the potential of this network for fast communication among local Chinese schools. I don't know how many schools have been on this network, but it would be good for these schools to start using this network for mutual consultation on things that are related to Chinese schools. We can begin with a brief self-introduction by each local school to let people know a little bit about each other and go from there. Each time a new school joins the network, we send out a standardized welcome message asking them to do a brief introduction and give them access to previous introduction materials (we can save these introductions and put them together as a single file on the homepage). This way, the network members can be kept up to date on who are on the net. We should try to get as many local schools on the network as possible (association headquarter may provide technical advice on how to open up an e-mail account via commmercial companies if other means are not possbile). A network monitor may need be designated to direct the flow of discussion. 2. As an example of the use of this network, I have some specific questions regarding the upcoming annual conference in Ohio. I could make a long distance call to ask these questions, but I can save money and time by doing it here on the network. More importantly, by asking them here I may benefit other local schools that have the same questions. My questions are: (1) Does the Conference provide any form of financial support for local schools to attend the meeting (e.g., travel, hotel, and meal costs)? (2) Does the Conference help arrange lodge and food for the meeting? (3) Qualifications of the candidates for CSAUS positions and the number of candidates each school can have. Please let me know your comments on my above suggestion. Please also let me know your answers to my questions regarding the annual meeting. Thanks. The main purpose for the E-mail net and Internet homepage was and still is to save money and time, to improve the efficiency in communication and to exchange experiences between the members. Shanyang's comment on a single file for the CSAUS is excellent and I will contact Wengrong Jiang to get all files and post them on Internet Homepage including introduction about most of the "old" member schools and three News Letters. Ohio Contemporary Chinese School IS trying to get a work station for ourselves, however, we do not know if the current home page will be available for CSAUS after meeting because it takes a lot of time to operate it besides the cost. The financial consideration is an issue we will discuss during the meeting. Currently, there are 27 schools/members on the E-mail net list. I already asked Dr. Biao Chen to post a "lecture" material on how to communicate on internet. Anyone with experience and training is welcome to post his/her experts here on E-mail net since some people still do not quite sure how to up and down load the file. Regarding conference details, I explain as follows: 1. Chinese Community at Columbus can provide some means on local transportation and lodging if someone wants to cut cost. However, for those want to stay at a Hotel, a block of rooms will be reserved for the meeting. There will be a registration fee of $25 to $30 to cover meal and etc., There is a possibility of very limited compensation for MEMBER SCHOOLS, but we can not guarantee at this movement. 2. Meal will be arranged by the meeting committee. 3. Each member schools can have TWO Official attendants but with only ONE vote on issues. There is no limitation on the number of people from each school to attend the meetings. Non-member schools have no right to be any candidates for CSAUS positions. Other detail decisions is up to The Board to decide. There will be materials distributed to everyone in the very near future. It will also be posted on Internet.
